Alphonse Elric lost his body when he and his brother Edward Elric attempted to bring back their dead mother using forbidden human transmutation. When it failed Al lost his body, to save him Edward attached his soul to a suit of armour.
Al and Edward then search for the Philosophers Stone in order to restore their original bodies.
